Volunteers for Amelioration of Rural Areas (VARAS) is a non-profit, non-partisan, non-Governmental organization registered with the Registrar General Department in the Republic of Ghana under the companies code 1963 with registration number G-21, 982. VARAS operates in the Volta region of Ghana, Africa


Background

In developing regions like Ghana, Africa, rural areas, where the majority of the population (60%) live, have been encountering or facing several problems like poor health care delivery, poor educational services, inaccessibility to potable water, lack of knowledge of human rights, unemployment, improper management of environments, among other issues. These problems are affecting their lives and making living conditions in these areas uncomfortable for them unlike urban areas. Due to these problems and the understanding that the Government alone cannot resolve them, we have set up a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) named VARAS. We will work in our power in all these areas to make living conditions better for people in these rural areas.


Mission

VARAS is going to ameliorate the rural areas by supporting education and health care delivery in all forms, providing potable water, assisting the needy and orphanages in the affected communities. VARAS will provide contribution towards maintenance of the environment and microfinance with the aim of eradicating poverty. Also particular attention will be given to rural area activities such as indigenous designing, making cloth products, as well as agricultural developments.


Vision

VARAS's goal is to achieve employment opportunities, quality education, access to proper and quality health care services, eliminate poverty, produce healthy environments, as well as provide basic needs such as potable water, food, etc. Also, VARAS will structure and modernize income generating rural activities such as indigenous way of cloth product making, and agriculture that will lead to socio-economic development in Ghana.


Future Plans

With Agriculture being one of the dominant economic activities in rural areas, VARAS is going to give it particular attention. We are organizing teams of agricultural technicians and providing modern working tools and materials such as irrigational facilities, tractors, planters, harvesters and chemical products like fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides.

1) To offer voluntary services

2) To provide educational facilities such as classroom blocks, libraries, information technology centers (IT) and educational articles

3) Educate community members on human rights, primary and preventive health care such as family planning, proper nutrition, personal hygiene and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as HIV-AIDS

4) Promote interaction of cultural development

5) Provisions of social amenities like toilets, wells, water pumps

6) Youth development / promotion

7) Organization of capacity building workshops

8) Allocation of funds to the community members as a service of micro finance to support and forward their medium and small enterprise efforts

9) Provision of workshops and raw materials for the weaving of Kente (local cloth) and ease its distribution / marketing

10) Promote the protection of the environment as well as sanitation


Membership

VARAS is open to volunteers from around the world regardless of gender, able or disabled. Co-operation with national / international bodies, churches, religious group / organizations, and corporations is vivaciously welcomed!
