VOLUNTEER WORK / PROJECTS

in Ghana, Africa

- - - -

Due to the state of rural communities as neglected areas, volunteerism is more than necessary to improve the quality of life in these locations. Therefore, VARAS, with its desire to ameliorate the rural areas, has identified the following volunteer categories required:

1. Serve as assistant teachers within the schools of these rural communities

2. Sensitization of community members on human rights, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs such as HIV-AIDS, syphilis, gonorrhoea), family planning, personal hygiene, and proper nutrition

3. Volunteers working at rural community health centers

4. Volunteers performing charity works such as working at the orphanages

VARAS as an organization believes that if the above areas of assistance are correctly accomplished it will considerably benefit the rural communities. For that matter we are appealing for everybody willing to volunteer and come!

PROJECTS

Infrastructure Development:

Volunteers are kindly called upon to come and assist to help us achieve the goal of ameliorating the rural areas. The following are the projects initiated by VARAS to raise the standard of living for the neglected rural communities:

1. Construction of well furnished classroom blocks, libraries, Information Technology (IT) centers

2. Building of community health centers and supplying of health care delivery materials

3. Provision of wells, water pumps, public toilets, etc

Volunteers are vivaciously called upon to come and realize the above projects through physical involvement and kind contribution in terms of the provision of necessary raw materials. Volunteers are also humbly invited to raise funds towards the completion of these projects.

Useful Summer Holiday:

A special project taking place during the summer months, which is designed for both professionals and non-professionals. While enjoying your summer holiday, you will be putting your knowledge, skills, and voluntary Spirit into the service of the deprived rural communities, thus improving their living conditions. Is that not funny?

- You will be taking school children through vacation classes, sensitize community members about family planning, good nutrition, good environmental practices and also about sexually transmitted infections and diseases such as HIV-AIDS.

- Volunteers will be planting trees that will help to protect the environment.

- You can participate in ongoing building projects with your physical involvement.

- Capacity building workshops will be organized by the professionals in their various domains to raise the standard of their African counterparts.

- Professional health care workers will organize screening sessions thus improving the health status of the communities.

- Because we really want you to enjoy your holiday months, a package tour throughout Ghana to visit our attractive and educational tourist sites will also be organized.

You will gain vast experience by working under African conditions and also feel that you contributed to the amelioration of the living conditions of rural communities while enjoying your holiday. Everybody is therefore invited to come and spend their summer holiday "usefully" with VARAS!

Speak French Fluently:

Speak French Fluently is an educative project initiated by VARAS where volunteers that can speak and write French are invited to come and teach. The objective of the project is to help Ghanaians to have the command of the French language. The project is of course motivated by the fact that less than 2% Ghanaian graduates from senior high school are able to speak and write the French language. The world has become a global village where the command of a language like French is more than necessary for a complete development of those willing to learn.

Volunteers are not expected to be an expert in French. Any amount of knowledge of the language is sufficient. You are therefore warmly invited.
